Dear BMin Christine Aschbacher,
Dear BM Rudolf Anschober,
Dear AMS board member Herbert Buchinger
Dear AMS board member Johannes Kopf

Graz, April 7th, 2020

Suspension of sanctions

During an interview on April 1st, 2020 at ORF, AMS board member Johannes Kopf announced that there are currently only selectively vacant positions in systemically relevant areas. He also said that the 75,000 vacancies listed by the AMS are relics and the companies are not looking for staff. It would therefore be logical that the monthly self-applications to be submitted in the agreements between AMS and the unemployed are not required until normal conditions prevail in Austria again. In general, the duty to apply should be suspended because not all unemployed people have the infrastructure at home to apply by post (computer, printer, copier) or e-mail (Internet).

In addition, you can see in the crisis that there are enough interested parties for vacancies - e.g. the short-term need in agriculture due to the lack of harvest workers from abroad. Nobody has to be forced to do so.

We know that sanctions do not have the expected effects. Rather, this will massively accelerate the spiral of impoverishment and poverty for those affected.

We are therefore calling for the sanctions to be suspended as of March 15, 2020 - both in the area of labor market administration (blocking of unemployment benefits or emergency assistance) and in the area of social assistance and minimum income (reduction of the BMS or SH-new).

With best regards and the request to consider our concerns
